The independent MP gives the first public signal in support of protesters, one day after leaving the Socialist Party.

Just one day after announcing her departure from the Socialist Party and her transition to an independent MP, Marjana Koçeku has made her first public signal indicating alignment with protesters.

The Shkodër MP, known as “Neomalsorja,” has posted a flamingo on social media, a symbol that has been identified in recent days with protests against the government. Although without any accompanying comment, the post appears to be a political message and an expression of support for the protest movement.

The reaction comes at a difficult moment for the Socialist Party, as the country is experiencing the 16th day of protests, while signs of dissatisfaction have begun to appear openly within the party itself. Koçeku herself announced her departure from the Socialist group a day earlier, stating that the decision was related to her personal beliefs and values.

The publication of the protest symbol is seen by many observers as a further step in her distancing from the ruling majority. If her resignation from the Socialist Party was considered a political blow to Prime Minister Edi Rama, today’s post seems to strengthen the perception that the MP is positioning herself closer to the protesters’ cause.

So far, Koçeku has not made any direct statement in support of the protests nor clarified the meaning of her post. However, the choice of the flamingo, a symbol that has accompanied recent marches and mobilizations, is hardly seen as a coincidence in the current political climate.

Reactions among commenters are divided. Many criticize her, calling for her to resign as MP altogether. Some accuse her of the failure of the 2018 student protest. A large portion, however, congratulate her and welcome her stance.
