Health experts are warning about a serious risk that many people ignore: using a phone in total darkness at night can severely damage the eyes and, in extreme cases, even lead to permanent vision loss.
An ophthalmologist explains that people with a particular eye structure, known as “narrow angles,” are more exposed to this risk.
In the dark, the pupil dilates to let in more light, but in some individuals, this dilation can block the natural flow of fluid inside the eye.
As a result, the internal eye pressure increases, causing acute angle-closure glaucoma, which can damage the optic nerve within just a few hours. Without immediate treatment, the damage becomes irreversible, and vision cannot be restored.
Doctors emphasize that the strong light of a phone screen in a completely dark environment is one of the main factors that triggers this condition.
