A landslide occurred on Wednesday at midday at the beginning of the new Qukës–Qafë Plloçë road, on one of its slopes.
Fortunately, no damage was reported, but the incident has raised concerns about the safety and durability of this road, which was inaugurated after 14 years of construction and at a staggering cost of 260 million euros.
The contracting company intervened to clear the road, and work to stabilize the terrain continued on Thursday. However, the recurrence of landslides on a section that was supposed to be new and safe indicates serious issues in design, supervision, and construction quality.
Just a few weeks ago, a rockslide on the same route blocked one lane for hours.
The road, which was expected to be a strategic investment connecting the East and West, is turning into an example of negligence and mismanagement of public funds.
Instead of facilitating movement and regional development, the Qukës–Qafë Plloçë route, whose construction lasted 14 years, shows that 260 million euros do not guarantee a durable project, especially when transparency and quality are lacking at every stage of construction.
The new national road Qukës–Qafë Plloçë was inaugurated by Prime Minister Edi Rama and Minister of Infrastructure Belinda Balluku on September 5 of this year.
