Flu Situation and Viral Infections Among Children in Korçë
During this winter period, the flu situation in the country has significantly affected children, leading to an increase in seasonal viral infections. In the pediatric service of Korçë Hospital, an average of 50-60 visits are recorded daily from children of different age groups. However, according to doctors, this is an expected situation for this season and does not represent a concerning alarm.
Most children visiting the hospital do not require hospitalization, as their symptoms are mild and can be managed at home. In most cases, parents bring their children for a check-up at the first signs of fever and cough. Only a small percentage of them, who show more severe complications, require specialized treatment and hospitalization.
The most common complications leading to hospitalization include respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis and ear infections, as well as gastrointestinal issues such as severe vomiting and diarrhea. Doctors emphasize that the increase in cases is not unusual and aligns with the nationwide situation during the cold season.
One of the factors that contribute to the spread of viral infections is the frequenting of overcrowded places by parents with their children. Locations such as cafés, shopping centers, and enclosed spaces with large gatherings increase the risk of virus transmission. Another concerning factor is sending sick children to daycare or school before they have fully recovered, which further facilitates the spread of infections among other children.
Pediatricians urge parents to exercise greater caution, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and avoiding unnecessary contact in crowded environments. They also recommend closely monitoring children’s symptoms and taking measures to prevent the virus from spreading to others.
In cold and humid weather conditions, protecting children from viral infections remains a constant challenge for parents and the healthcare system. Although the situation is expected for this period, extra care is advised to prevent the spread of infections and safeguard children’s health.
