Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico accused the opposition of attempting to “organize a coup” amid escalating demonstrations against his alleged pro-Moscow stance and a push for a no-confidence vote in parliament.

During his speech in the Slovak parliament, Fico also dismissed claims of a supposed shift in the country’s foreign policy orientation and reaffirmed Slovakia’s membership in both the EU and NATO.

Although Fico stated that his government would not take any action regarding the constitutional right to assemble and organize, he claimed the existence of a structure seeking to exploit the protests to escalate tensions.

“We see a structure that wants to use these meetings and gatherings primarily for a potential clash with the state’s security forces,” he said, “there are even steps aimed at disrupting the ability of the government of the Slovak Republic to carry out its work.”
