The high temperatures of recent days have put at risk over 700 newly planted tree saplings on the hills above the city of Korçë, near the Church of Saint Thanas.
The prolonged drought and lack of rainfall have exposed the saplings to massive drying, threatening to undo an important environmental and civic investment.
To save these saplings, since last night and during the early hours of this morning, intensive interventions have been carried out using private equipment and volunteer assistance.
Ardit Konomi, one of the main initiators of this project, stated that extraordinary efforts have been made to ensure watering of the saplings by transporting water with private means and involving engaged citizens.
“It is our duty not to allow all this civic and environmental effort to go to waste due to weather conditions. We are doing our best with the resources available, but we also need more support to guarantee continuity,” Konomi said.
The greening initiative of the hills was undertaken last year as part of efforts to improve the environment and restore green spaces in the city of Korçë.
It has been realized through contributions from citizens, associations, and support from the local community.
The initiators’ appeal is clear: assistance is needed from relevant institutions and citizens to guarantee the survival of the trees and to preserve the greenery that is returning to the area surrounding the city.
