A total of 770 kilograms of cocaine has been seized at the port of Vado Ligure in Italy, in an operation carried out by Italian authorities against international drug trafficking.
The shipment, worth around €250 million on the illegal market, was discovered hidden inside a refrigerated container that had arrived from Ecuador.
The operation was conducted by the Guardia di Finanza in cooperation with Italian customs authorities, following inspections of a container transporting pallets of bananas. Inside the shipment, officers discovered packages containing cocaine, which authorities described as being of high purity.
According to preliminary investigations, the container entered Italy from one of Ecuador’s main ports and is suspected of being part of an international narcotics trafficking network. Authorities are working to identify those responsible and determine the drug’s final destination.
The seizure in Vado Ligure is considered one of the largest operations carried out at this port in recent years. It is the second major operation in the same area within a few weeks, after authorities previously seized 340 kilograms of cocaine worth around €120 million.
Investigations are continuing to fully uncover the supply chain and the criminal network behind the shipment.
