AI is changing cyber warfare, “Five Eyes” warns of new risks for governments and businesses

Five of the world’s most important intelligence and cybersecurity agencies have raised a new alarm about the impact of artificial intelligence on digital security, warning that the rapid development of these technologies is significantly increasing the risk of more sophisticated cyberattacks that are harder to detect.

In a joint statement from the “Five Eyes” alliance, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, it is emphasized that new artificial intelligence models could be exploited by various actors to target governments, public institutions, and private companies. According to them, some of these capabilities could emerge in a very short time frame, even within just a few months.

Cybersecurity authorities stress that artificial intelligence plays a dual role: on one hand, it strengthens digital defense and security systems, while on the other, it also enables malicious groups to create faster, more automated attacks that are harder to identify or stop in time.

The statement also underlines that cyber risk should not be treated only as a technical or IT-specific issue, but as a direct responsibility of top-level state and corporate leadership. According to them, high-level decision-making is essential to strengthen protection against these growing threats.

The warning comes at a time when several Western countries have begun to consider or restrict the use of advanced artificial intelligence models, due to concerns over their potential misuse in the field of national security and critical infrastructure.

Cybersecurity experts emphasize that, while technology is evolving at a very rapid pace, the potential is also increasing for different groups, including criminal actors and state-sponsored entities to gain access to increasingly powerful tools for carrying out large-scale cyberattacks.

In this context, Western countries are trying to find a balance between the major economic and technological benefits that artificial intelligence brings and the serious risks it may create for global security and digital stability.
