Alarm in Greece! West Nile virus is spreading rapidly, 6 deaths and dozens hospitalized

Greece is facing a significant increase in West Nile virus infections. The National Public Health Organization (EODY) has reported 23 new cases over the past week, bringing the total number of confirmed locally acquired cases since the start of the surveillance period to 65 as of August 5.

According to official data, 54 patients have developed severe forms of the disease, with complications affecting the Central Nervous System, including encephalitis, meningitis, and acute flaccid paralysis. Meanwhile, 11 people have experienced mild symptoms or no neurological complications.

The death toll has reached six. According to EODY, all those who lost their lives were over the age of 65 and had neurological complications related to the infection.

Currently, 20 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals, while some of them are in intensive care units due to their critical health condition.

Cases have been identified in 25 municipalities across the country, spread across ten regional units of Attica, Thessaly, and Central Macedonia. Among the affected areas are Eastern Attica, Northern, Central, and Southern Athens, Western Attica, as well as Karditsa, Larissa, Trikala, Pella, and Serres.

Greek health authorities warn that the circulation of the virus is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with the possibility of new cases emerging both in already affected areas and in other regions of the country. According to EODY, this year the spread of the virus has been particularly intense in the Attica region.
