An Albanian mother, Lirie Delishi, 25, mother of three children including a newborn, has become the first woman to be extradited from the United Kingdom to Albania to serve a prison sentence, according to British media.

The English court approved her extradition, stating that the UK should not be considered a “safe haven” for individuals wanted by other countries, even though this would create difficulties for her family.

Albanian authorities requested Delishi’s extradition to serve four months in prison, as in 2019 she was caught attempting to travel to Rome using a falsified Romanian passport at Tirana Airport.

On appeal, Delishi, who was pregnant with her third child at the time, requested not to be extradited, emphasizing that separation from her children would be terrible and that her partner, Edmond, would have to close one of his businesses to take care of them. However, the court rejected her request.

Delishi is expected to serve her sentence at the women’s prison in Pojskë, which has a capacity of around 110 inmates. She is still in the UK awaiting an appeal against the decision.

A graduate in computer engineering, Delishi had moved to the UK in 2019 to join her partner and start a new family. She stated that her family in Albania is “ashamed” of the incident and that “she has never been part of a family involved in trouble.”
