A 52-year-old Albanian man has been arrested in Montenegro after being accused of raping a 22-year-old woman on a deserted beach in Kassandra, Halkidiki, Greece, in 2022.
According to Greek media reports, the man was arrested on Wednesday in Montenegro following a European arrest warrant issued against him. The necessary procedures have begun for his extradition to Greece, where he is expected to face the authorities.
After the alleged sexual assault, the Albanian man fled Greece. Initially, another person had been accused after being mistakenly identified by the victim, but his involvement was not proven.
The 52-year-old, who worked as a shepherd in the Halkidiki region, was later identified through a DNA sample taken from sheets at the shelter where he lived. Laboratory analysis reportedly matched his genetic material with evidence from the victim.
The alleged attack took place on May 30, 2022. The victim later told Greek media that she had gone to the beach around lunchtime for a quick swim before starting her shift at the hotel where she worked.
“I couldn’t have gotten out alive,” she said at the time, describing how the man approached her, asked her several questions, and then suddenly attacked and assaulted her.
