Australia gives Turkey a cold shower, outshines Yildiz and company, and closes in on the USA

Australia defeated Turkey in a Group D match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The game, played at BC Place Stadium, ended with a 2-0 victory for the Australians.


Australia's goals came in two different phases of the match. Irakunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute to give his side the lead, before Metcalfe doubled the advantage in the 75th minute.


Turkey tried to get back into the game but failed to change the course of the match. With this result, Australia sits in second place with three points, level with the United States, which leads the group on the same tally. Meanwhile, Turkey is third in the standings, leaving Paraguay at the bottom of the group.
