A brown bear remains at large after attacking a group of students in Canada, leaving 11 people injured, two of them in critical condition.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon on a trail in the town of Bella Coola, in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Residents have been warned to stay indoors, while armed officers are trying to track the animal. Four of the injured remain in hospital, according to the Health Services Authority.

A teacher “was hurt the most,” and several children were sprayed with bear spray as adults tried to drive the animal away, parent Veronica Schooner told local media.

Schooner said her 10-year-old son was part of the student group but was not attacked. “He said the bear ran so close to him but was chasing someone else,” she added, noting that “he even felt its fur.”

In a statement to the BBC, Health Emergency Services said that two people are in critical condition, two others are seriously injured, while seven others were treated at the scene.

The patients were transported to a nearby airport to be airlifted by helicopter to the nearest hospital.
