Canada makes history at the World Cup, destroys Qatar 6–0 and takes the top spot in the group!

The explosion of joy from Canadian fans was proportional to years of endless waiting.

Forty years after their first appearance at the World Cup in 1986, they finally won their first match in the tournament, with a small bonus: they secured the victory at home, in the noisy BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

The crowd erupted at the final whistle after this attacking masterclass against Qatar (6–0) on Thursday, fueled by the American coach of the Canadians, Jesse Marsch, who expressed his wild joy throughout the team’s victory lap.

It must be said that the Canadians had a strange afternoon: an early scare from a Qatari counterattack after just forty seconds, followed by a barrage of goals.

Cyle Larin, who had already scored the equalizer against Bosnia (1–1) for Canada’s first point in the tournament, found the net again in the 16th minute, definitively shedding his reputation as a clumsy striker.

Criticized after a somewhat poor first performance, Jonathan David scored a hat-trick (29’, 45’+3, 90’+2), silencing all doubts about him. Even the substitutes made their mark: Nathan Saliba scored from a direct free kick (64’), and Jacob Shaffelburg forced an own goal from Al-Mannai (75’).

The scenario was truly perfect, like a well-written American soap opera—except this time there was no happy ending for the opponents. Already nervous and aggressive to the point of receiving an early red card (32’), the Qataris did not calm down after halftime, with the bench also showing a poor attitude.

Assim Madibo was also sent off (54’), but more importantly, he injured Ismaël Koné in the process. The images chilled his teammates’ blood, who immediately gathered around him to shield him from the cameras. Taken off on a stretcher, sitting up and applauding the crowd that gave him a standing ovation, the midfielder almost certainly played his last minutes of this World Cup.

After the 6–0 victory, Canada tops Group B with 4 points, level with Switzerland but with a better goal difference, taking a strong step toward qualification. The next match for Canada is against Switzerland, led by Granit Xhaka and teammates, where a draw would be enough for both teams.
