Colombia defeats Uzbekistan 3–1 and takes the top of the group!

Colombia defeated Uzbekistan 3–1 on Thursday morning (Albanian time) in Group K of the 2026 World Cup. In Mexico City, the Latin American side began their campaign in this edition by beating debutants Uzbekistan in such a tournament. Despite the loss, Uzbekistan, coached by Fabio Cannavaro, showed quality and managed to score a goal.


All 12 groups have now played their opening matches.


At the Azteca, it took until the 40th minute for Colombia to open the scoring through Daniel Muñoz, following an assist from Luis Díaz. Uzbekistan surprised everyone on their World Cup debut when they equalized in the 60th minute through Abbosbek Fayzullaev. The draw lasted only five minutes, as Colombia pushed forward and found a second goal through their star player Luis Díaz.


In the ninth minute of stoppage time, there was also a third goal for Colombia, scored by Jaminton Campaz, who had come on in the second half in place of James Rodríguez.


After the first round of matches in Group K, Colombia leads the group with three points, followed by Congo and Portugal with one point each, while Uzbekistan has zero points. In the upcoming matches in this group, Portugal will face Uzbekistan on June 23, while Colombia plays Congo on June 24.
