Earth shakes: A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits this country!

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck northeastern Japan early this morning, but no tsunami warning has been issued, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The epicentre of the earthquake, which occurred at 5:21 a.m. local time, was in the Pacific Ocean near Iwate Prefecture, at a depth of about 40 kilometres, according to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, Kyodo reports.

The quake reached intensity level 5 on Japan’s seismic scale of 7 in parts of Aomori and Iwate prefectures.

According to Tohoku Electric Power, no disruptions were reported at the Higashidori nuclear power plant in Aomori or the Onagawa nuclear complex in Miyagi Prefecture.

The earthquake comes just days after a magnitude 7.2 quake hit the same region, injuring at least 10 people, disrupting high-speed trains, and temporarily closing schools.

On Friday, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake also struck Yamanashi Prefecture in central Japan, near Mount Fuji and surrounding areas.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, such an intensity of earthquakes in Yamanashi was last recorded in 1924, and the quake was not linked to volcanic activity at Mount Fuji, Kyodo reports.
