EARTHQUAKE SHAKES REGION / Strong 5.0-magnitude tremor strikes in the early hours of the morning

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey's southeastern province of Malatya early this morning and was felt in neighboring provinces, but caused no damage or casualties, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

"There are no indications of any adverse situation following the 5.0-magnitude earthquake that struck at 6:20 a.m. in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province and was felt in the provinces of Malatya, Elazığ, Adıyaman, Tunceli, and Şanlıurfa. Our teams continue to operate in the field," AFAD said.

"We have not identified any negative developments, but we are assessing all reports," Turkish Minister of Environment and Urban Development Murat Kurum said.

In 2023, southeastern Turkey was hit by a devastating earthquake that killed more than 53,000 people and caused widespread destruction across many cities in the region.
