After a battle that lasted throughout the night, the large fire that broke out on Saturday evening in the Oreokastro area near Thessaloniki has been brought under control and no longer has active fronts.

According to Greek authorities, firefighting teams are continuing operations to extinguish remaining hotspots, mainly in two factories affected by the flames. These include a textile factory and a recycling plant, where the fire caused significant damage.

A total of 160 firefighters with 52 vehicles and aerial support are taking part in the operation, while four firefighters were taken to hospital.

Although the situation has been stabilized, thick black smoke continues to cover a large part of Thessaloniki. The smoke cloud is visible from miles away, while the smell of burning plastic has been reported in several parts of the city.
