Franco Baresi has passed away at the age of 66, one of the greatest defenders in the history of Italian football and an icon of AC Milan and the Italian national team. The news was confirmed by the club where he spent his entire professional career.

Through a post on social media, Milan paid tribute to its legendary captain: “The history of Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will remain forever, just like his number 6 shirt, a fundamental part of the club’s DNA and journey. Baresi, who celebrated his 66th birthday on May 8, had been battling a serious illness for some time. In 2025, he underwent surgery for a lung nodule, while in recent years he had continued his fight against the disease, facing it with dignity and courage.

Despite his health condition, he also appeared at the “San Siro” stadium and was among the final torchbearers of the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

With the AC Milan shirt, Baresi played a total of 719 matches, winning six Italian league titles and three European Cups/Champions League trophies. With the Italian national team, he made 81 appearances and became a world champion in 1982.
