Two children, aged 2 and 4, were found lifeless this afternoon inside their family car in Carpentras, in southern France, as the country faces an extreme heatwave.

According to the Carpentras prosecutor, Hélène Mourez, the exact causes of death have not yet been determined, but high temperatures are suspected to have played a decisive role in the tragedy.

The children were discovered around 1:10 p.m. in the vehicle parked near their home, after their mother had returned from shopping. Despite the efforts of emergency services to revive them, both were pronounced dead.

Local media report that it is still unclear how the children entered the car and how long they remained inside. Preliminary investigations suggest they may have entered the vehicle without their 33-year-old mother’s knowledge.

The incident comes at a time when France is experiencing one of the most intense heatwaves ever recorded. Authorities have placed 49 departments under the highest level of heat alert, while over 90% of the population is expected to be affected by the extreme weather conditions.
