"He spoke with the angels": A moving account of Stavri Shkurti's final days

Stavri Shkurti remains one of the greatest names in Albanian performing arts, an actor whose talent and performances left an indelible mark on Albanian cinema and theater.

Sadly, his life was cut short. The renowned actor passed away in 1998 in Greece, where he had emigrated after the 1990s together with his family—his wife and their two sons, Dionis and Gjergj.

The final days of his life have remained a deeply emotional memory for his family. His wife, Florika Shkurti, recalled that while hospitalized in Greece, Stavri Shkurti appeared to be "speaking with the angels" during the last hours of his life.

Beyond the pain of losing him, his family has also carried other disappointments, including the way the great artist's memory has been treated since his passing.

One of the most heartbreaking incidents was the vandalism of his grave in the city's public cemetery. According to his wife, the cross, the lantern, and the bronze letters of his name were stolen.

"We had them made in Greece, and they were stolen because they shone like gold," Florika Shkurti said, expressing her sorrow over the lack of respect shown toward the memory of one of Albania's most important artistic figures.

Stavri Shkurti left this world behind, but he also left unforgettable performances and an extraordinary artistic legacy. Yet the story of his desecrated grave remains a painful reminder that respect for great artists should endure long after they are gone.
