A case that has shocked public opinion in the United Kingdom has ended with the conviction of two men over the death of 13-month-old baby Preston Davy, just months after he had been adopted by them.

After an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, the jury found 37-year-old Jamie Varley guilty of murdering the baby, while his partner, 32-year-old John McGowan-Fazakerley, was convicted of causing or allowing the child’s death.

During the trial, disturbing details emerged about the treatment the infant received during the four months he lived with the couple following his adoption in April 2023. Varley was also found guilty of multiple other offences, including sexual abuse of a child, child cruelty, and the production and distribution of indecent images involving minors.

Meanwhile, McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of several charges related to child abuse and failing to prevent the child’s death.

According to evidence presented in court, Preston—described by relatives and witnesses as a happy and loved baby, had been admitted to hospital three times within four months of being adopted.

The child died on 27 July 2023 at Blackpool Victoria Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest. Initially, Varley claimed he had left the baby alone in the bath for a few minutes and later found him submerged in water.

However, forensic investigations disproved this account. The autopsy ruled out drowning as the cause of death and revealed multiple internal and external injuries, which experts considered non-accidental.

Doctors determined that the cause of death was acute blockage of the upper airways, which could have been caused by asphyxiation or the insertion of an object into the child’s mouth.

The prosecution argued that the baby had been the victim of a systematic campaign of physical and sexual abuse during the months he spent with the couple. According to investigators, severe acts of violence had been carried out against him, and illegal audiovisual material had been recorded.

The case has sparked strong reactions in the UK and raised questions about post-adoption monitoring procedures for children, while authorities have promised a full review of the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
