Two very strong earthquakes with magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on Wednesday, causing building collapses, extensive material damage, and panic among residents, especially in the capital Caracas.
According to authorities, 32 deaths have been confirmed so far, along with more than 700 injured people, while the toll is expected to rise in the coming hours.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency in the country and announced that the international airport serving Caracas has suffered severe damage. As a result, airport operations have been suspended until further notice.
Rodríguez expressed condolences to the families of the victims, while authorities also suspended school classes and temporarily halted railway services.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the first seismic shock with a magnitude of 7.2 was recorded at 6:04 PM local time, at a depth of 21.9 kilometers and about 200 kilometers west of Caracas.
Just 39 seconds later, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the same area, at a depth of 10 kilometers and about 45 kilometers from the first epicenter. Following the two main quakes, around 20 strong aftershocks have also been recorded.
In Caracas, search and rescue teams have begun operations near collapsed buildings. According to reports from the ground, many people have been pulled from the rubble on stretchers, while others have been urgently transported to hospitals.
