New details continue to emerge from the tragic incident in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, where a 14-year-old student opened fire inside a school, causing the death of 9 people, including 8 students and one teacher.
Shortly before carrying out the attack, the minor had posted a disturbing message in English on an online platform, warning of the act: “I can do it today around three o’clock. Fifth and sixth grade students, get ready. I feel so done today.”
According to media reports, a parent testified about the tense moments after the attack began. He stated that after seeing other parents trying to neutralize the attacker, he intervened and injured him with a sharp object found at the scene.
Reports suggest that this injury may have been the actual cause of the 14-year-old’s death, rather than suicide as initially reported. Preliminary forensic findings indicate that the minor suffered a fatal injury to his right leg, which led to uncontrolled bleeding after a major blood vessel was severed.
The forensic examination was carried out by a team consisting of two forensic doctors, a cameraman, and a photography specialist. The report describes post-mortem lividity in non-pressure areas, multiple traces of dried blood, and other technical elements related to the examination. It also notes that nylon protective bags were found on his hands, while four electrodes were found on his back.
The investigation has also focused on the teenager’s psychological state. According to his father, a former police officer, the 14-year-old had begun seeing a psychologist in recent months due to isolation and the long hours he spent online and playing violent video games.
“My son had been visiting a psychologist for two months. He spent a lot of time on the computer and playing shooting games. He was intelligent, but withdrawn and isolated,” the father said, who has now been arrested, as the weapons used in the attack were reportedly owned by him.
A recently published video shows the father taking the boy to a shooting range two days before the incident, where he gives him advice on improving his shooting skills.
Another video filmed by classmates shows the 14-year-old performing unusual behavior in class, simulating the use of a gun with his hands.
Turkish authorities have stated that the minor showed interest in previous attackers. According to police, he used an image related to Elliot Rodger on his WhatsApp profile.
Rodger killed six people on a university campus in California in 2014 before taking his own life. In the materials he left behind, he justified the act as a form of “punishment,” which has raised concerns about the influence of such figures on young people.
Investigations into the full circumstances of the incident are ongoing, while the case has once again brought attention to sensitive issues such as access to weapons, mental health in minors, and the influence of digital content.
