For over a year, a new pension reform has been under discussion, aiming for a fairer proportional system, but negotiations with the European Union have complicated matters. The EU has set a condition that the retirement age be accelerated for both men and women.
Under the current law, this increase was expected to take effect by the year 2056.
However, the EU is demanding that this change be legally sanctioned and that the transition period be shorter, avoiding such a long timeline. Speculation suggests the reform might be accelerated to occur around 2040 or 2045. For Albania to become a full member of the European Union, such a change must be enshrined in law.
It appears that discussions have already begun on this point, and it has now been sanctioned that the retirement age of 67 years is to be reached by 2056. However, moving this date closer is still under discussion.
Currently, the retirement age for men is 65, while for women, there is a gradual increase of two months each year, starting from the age of 61, until it aligns with the men’s retirement age of 65. After that, a further increase in the retirement age for men is also foreseen.
