New York police have launched an investigation into an unusual phenomenon that is troubling authorities and residents: groups of people appearing to emerge from sewer manholes in various parts of the city during the night.

The case gained attention after several videos were posted on social media showing individuals climbing out of the sewer system and then disappearing without a trace.

In a statement to the media, the New York Police Department said that special emergency units carried out detailed inspections of the sewer network to determine whether there was any danger to the public.

“Our officers entered the system to ensure that nothing suspicious or dangerous had been left behind, but nothing was found,” the statement said.

The Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees the city's sewer system, also confirmed that no damage to the infrastructure had been detected.

According to a senior law enforcement official, one of the theories being investigated is that these individuals may be searching for valuable items that end up in the wastewater system.

Reported cases

The first incident was reported last Thursday at around 11:00 p.m. in the Gravesend area of Brooklyn, where a witness saw eight people opening a manhole and climbing inside. They were seen again about three hours later as they emerged from the sewers and changed clothes next to parked cars.

Just two hours later, another group was reported in Williamsburg, also in Brooklyn. According to authorities, the individuals emerged from a manhole after spending more than two and a half hours underground and then drove away.

A video posted online shows seven people climbing out of a manhole, while the last person carefully closes the cover behind them.

A similar incident had also been reported on May 5 in Astoria, Queens, where residents saw several people entering the sewer system in the early hours of the morning.

One witness described the scene as “something out of a movie,” saying the individuals “went down into the manhole like the Ninja Turtles.”

Still no answers

Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have not yet confirmed whether these incidents are connected or whether they are part of some organized activity.

Meanwhile, the mystery of the “sewer people” remains unsolved, raising questions about what is really happening beneath the streets of one of the world’s largest cities.
