Norway begin the 2026 World Cup with a victory, Haaland shines with a brace against Iraq

Norway began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a victory, defeating Iraq 4-1 at Gillette Stadium in Boston in a Group I match.

The Nordic side, led by Erling Haaland, dominated most of the contest, although Iraq briefly restored parity and managed to leave their mark on the game.

The first half was characterized by cautious play from both teams. The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when Haaland capitalized on an assist from Wolfe and beat goalkeeper Hassan to give Norway the lead. Iraq responded ten minutes later, with Hussein scoring the equalizer in the 39th minute.

However, the Iraqis' joy was short-lived. Just a few minutes later, Haaland struck again to restore Norway’s advantage, sending his side into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

In the second half, Norway sealed the victory. Leo Østigård scored the third goal for the team coached by Ståle Solbakken, while in the final minutes an own goal by Hussein completed the final 4-1 scoreline.

This success gives Norway three crucial points in its quest to return to the FIFA World Cup after 28 years of absence.

After the opening matches, Group I is led by Norway and France with three points each. France defeated Senegal 3-1, while Senegal and Iraq remain without points.

In the next round, France will face Iraq on June 22, while Norway will play against Senegal on June 23.
