Powerful explosion in Thessaloniki, major damage reported in the residential area

A powerful explosion occurred in the early hours of Saturday (July 26) in Thessaloniki, on the ground floor of an apartment building located at 19 Makedonomachon Street, near the borders of the Neapolis-Sykeon municipality.

According to Thestival.gr, a man and a woman sustained minor injuries from shattered glass. Both were taken to Hippocrates Hospital and are not in any danger.

The strong blast, which was heard over a wide area, caused significant material damage to the ground floor of the apartment building and to at least four adjacent apartment buildings.

Six cars were also damaged, while the shockwave caused destruction even at a considerable distance.

Firefighters and police forces rushed to the scene. According to reports, the president of the prison officers' federation resides in the affected building.

The initial assessment by the Hellenic Police was that the attack on the apartment building may have been a terrorist act.
