A tragic incident in Brazil has raised numerous questions after a 46-year-old man was killed just hours after being released from prison, where he had spent nearly two decades.

The man, João Ferreira da Silva, was released in December 2025 from a prison in Sinop after serving around 20 years of a 42-year sentence for a serious crime against a nine-year-old child.

However, his freedom lasted only a few hours. Da Silva was shot dead in the street, near the guesthouse where he was staying.

Security cameras captured the moment of the attack. The perpetrators, who had covered their faces, immediately fled the scene.

So far, no arrests have been reported. Police in the state of Mato Grosso are investigating the case as a homicide and are working to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive.

The incident has attracted significant attention in Brazil due to the extremely short time between the 46-year-old’s release and his killing, once again sparking discussions about the safety of people convicted of serious crimes after their release.
