Scientists discover technology that removes up to 97% of microplastics from water

What are microplastics?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles found almost everywhere in the environment. They can enter wastewater through the washing of synthetic clothes, the use of plastic sponges, cosmetic products, and many other everyday items. From there, they can make their way into rivers, seas, and even the water we drink.
How does the new technology work?
The new method uses a combination of microbubbles and nanobubbles of air. Microbubbles are small air bubbles that lift plastic particles to the surface of the water. Nanobubbles, which are even smaller, cause the microplastics to stick together and form larger clusters. Thanks to this combination, the microplastics become easier to remove from the water.
Study results
In laboratory tests, the system managed to remove:
up to 95% of polyethylene, one of the most widely used plastics in the world;
up to 97% of polystyrene, the material used for packaging and plastic foam (Styrofoam).
These results could significantly improve the processes currently used in wastewater treatment plants.
Can it also be used for drinking water?
According to the authors of the study, this technology could also be adapted for drinking water treatment in the future. However, further studies are needed to ensure that the system is fully safe and effective according to drinking water quality standards. If this is achieved, the technology could help reduce the amount of microplastics that people consume every day through drinking water.
What can we do?
Experts emphasize that there is no reason to panic, but it is important to be aware of the presence of microplastics in the environment.
To reduce exposure and pollution, they recommend:
reducing the use of single-use plastic products;
using glass, stainless steel, or wooden containers and cooking utensils instead of plastic;
recycling as much plastic as possible;
avoiding the disposal of plastic waste into the environment.
