Japan was hit today by four earthquakes, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. All four earthquakes occurred offshore, east of Japan’s largest island, Honshu.
The weakest earthquake had a magnitude of 4.1. The epicenter of the strongest quake was at a depth of 10 kilometers and 132 kilometers from the city of Miyako.
NHK reported an incident in Miyagi prefecture in northeastern Japan, where a car fell into a one-meter-deep sinkhole caused by the earthquake. Police rescued the driver from the vehicle and no one was injured.
No tsunami warning was issued. Japan had also been struck yesterday by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, with residents in coastal areas advised to evacuate and move to safer, higher ground.
