Spain are world champions for the second time! Ferran Torres decides the final against Argentina in extra time, Messi’s reign comes to an end

Spain are the new World champions. The Iberians defeated Argentina 1-0 in a spectacular final played at the “MetLife Stadium”, with the match being decided only after 120 minutes of play.

Luis de la Fuente’s side started the game better and created the first dangerous chance in the fifth minute. Lamine Yamal tried his luck after an assist from Dani Olmo, but his shot was deflected by Lisandro Martínez and saved by goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

Just one minute later, Argentina responded with a quick counterattack. Lionel Messi broke through the Spanish defenders, but Unai Simón came off his line in time and neutralized the danger. The first half ended goalless.

Spain continued to be the more attacking side at the start of the second half. Álex Baena tried his luck in the 46th minute, but Emiliano Martínez was once again alert.

The end of regular time was full of emotions. Nico Williams came close to scoring, but the Argentine goalkeeper made another crucial save. Later, Argentina was reduced to 10 players after Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card for a harsh challenge on Pau Cubarsí. In the final minute of stoppage time, Lamine Yamal tried from a free kick, but Martínez produced another spectacular save.

Despite Spain’s dominance, the 90 minutes ended in a 0-0 draw and the winner was decided in extra time.

Spain continued to apply pressure during extra time. In the 93rd minute, Nico Williams threatened with a header, but Emiliano Martínez was once again decisive. Three minutes later, Williams found the back of the net, but the referee ruled out the goal for a foul by Mikel Merino on Nicolás Otamendi during the build-up.

The first half of extra time ended goalless, but at the start of the final 15 minutes came the moment that decided the final. After a cross into the box and an assist from Nico Williams, Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match.

With this success, Spain wins the second World Cup title in its history, after triumphing in 2010, while Argentina fails to defend the title it won four years ago.

Ferran Torres enters Spanish football history as the scorer of the goal that returned “La Roja” to the top of world football.
