Strong 5.0 magnitude earthquake shakes neighboring country, here is where the epicenter was!

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck the area near the island of Karpathos on Wednesday afternoon, June 24, and was felt across a wide part of the region.

According to automatic data from the Geodynamic Institute, the seismic activity occurred at 11:25 a.m., with the epicenter located about 7 kilometers southwest of Karpathos and a focal depth of approximately 15.9 kilometers.

The tremor was particularly felt on the island of Kasos, where local authorities reported that the earthquake was strong but did not cause material damage.

The mayor of Kasos, Michalis Erotokritos, stated that the shaking was accompanied by a loud noise and caused residents to leave their homes as a precaution. However, no injuries or damages have been reported so far.

According to comments cited by Professor Efthimios Lekkas, the epicenter of the earthquake is not related to known historical fault lines in the region and is considered a local phenomenon. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre recorded the quake at a slightly lower magnitude of 4.9, while authorities continue to monitor seismic activity in the area.
