The official ball of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, “Trionda,” represents a major step forward in sports technology, as it includes an electronic system that requires charging before matches.
This process is similar to charging smart devices and is used to power the internal tracking system, which is considered one of the most advanced ever used in a football tournament.
According to technical data reported by a full charge provides enough power for around six hours, covering the entire duration of a match, including extra time.
Inside the ball, a highly sensitive motion sensor operating at 500 Hz is integrated, recording data 500 times per second. This allows the system to instantly identify every contact players make with the ball.
The sensor accurately monitors the ball’s position, speed, spin, and trajectory in the air. To avoid affecting the feel of the game, the approximately 14-gram module has been carefully placed inside one of the inner panels and balanced so that players do not notice it during shots or passes.
The data collected from the ball is combined with advanced camera systems in the 2026 World Cup stadiums across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including goal-line technology and the Hawk-Eye system, to create a three-dimensional model of the match.
This information is sent in real time to the VAR system, helping referees make faster and more accurate decisions in situations such as offsides or handballs. In this way, the technology aims to reduce errors and improve decision-making accuracy during matches.
