The 2026 World Cup enters the knockout stage, with the 16 round of 16 pairings now confirmed.

The matches in this stage begin this Sunday, with the opening clash between South Africa and Canada, scheduled to be played at 21:00.

The group stage of the 2026 World Cup has concluded, setting up the 16 ties for the first round of the knockout phase.

Among the most attractive matchups is Brazil vs Japan, where the “Seleção” will face one of the tournament’s surprises. There is also strong interest in Netherlands vs Morocco and Portugal vs Croatia, while Spain will face Austria.

Germany will begin its knockout campaign against Paraguay, while France will take on Sweden. If both teams progress, a classic Germany vs France clash could take place in the next round.

Another interesting scenario involves Portugal and Spain. If the Portuguese eliminate Croatia and the Spanish overcome Austria, the two Iberian rivals could meet in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Argentina, England, and France are considered favourites against their opponents on paper. The reigning world champions will face Cape Verde, and if they avoid upsets, their path toward the later stages appears more favourable compared to their main rivals.

Only three national teams finished the group stage with a perfect record, winning all three of their matches: Mexico, France, and Argentina.

Round of 16 matchups:

South Africa – Canada

Brazil – Japan

Netherlands – Morocco

USA – Bosnia and Herzegovina

Ivory Coast – Norway

Argentina – Cape Verde

France – Sweden

Germany – Paraguay

Australia – Egypt

Mexico – Ecuador

Portugal – Croatia

Colombia – Ghana

England – DR Congo

Belgium – Senegal

Spain – Austria

Switzerland – Algeria
