The last wish of a man to attend the Ajax–Groningen match was never fulfilled.

The Ajax–Groningen game was interrupted twice due to flares thrown onto the pitch by Ajax fans, forcing the referee to postpone the match to Tuesday, December 2, this time without any fans present. This delay, although a disciplinary matter, had a tragic consequence for one man.

Eighty-four-year-old Pieter, a lifelong Ajax supporter who was seriously ill, had only one final wish: to watch his beloved team play one last time in person. He was at the stadium on Sunday, but the match interruption prevented him from seeing it through to the end.

On Tuesday, he was supposed to be transported again to the Johan Cruijff Arena, but his health had deteriorated so much that he could no longer travel. Thus, because of the fans’ behavior and the match delay, his final wish was never realized.
