The Sun “disappears” on August 12. Here’s where the eclipse will be visible
One of the most remarkable astronomical phenomena of the year is expected to occur on August 12, 2026, when the Moon will pass between Earth and the Sun and completely cover the solar disk along a specific path across the planet.
The total eclipse will be visible from parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain, while partial phases of the phenomenon will be observable across a much wider area.
An eclipse occurs when the Moon positions itself between Earth and the Sun. In the area known as the “path of totality,” the Moon completely covers the Sun’s disk, causing daylight to dim significantly for a brief period.
During totality, the sky takes on the appearance of twilight, making stars and planets that normally cannot be seen during the day visible.
One of the main sights of the phenomenon is the solar corona, the Sun’s outer atmosphere. The brightness of the Sun’s surface normally makes it difficult to see from Earth, but during a total eclipse, the corona becomes visible around the Moon’s darkened disk.
The sudden change in light and temperature can also temporarily affect the behavior of some animals, which may react to the darkness as though evening has arrived.
Outside the path of totality, the eclipse will be partial. In these areas, the Moon will cover only part of the Sun, and the level of obscuration will vary depending on the observer’s location.
To view the partial phases of the eclipse, special eclipse glasses or equipment with certified solar filters are required. Looking directly at the Sun without proper protection can cause serious eye damage.
The August 12 eclipse comes just over two years after the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, which crossed Mexico, the United States and Canada.
