A shocking case was uncovered in Central Greece, where a woman had buried her mother for several years in the stable of their home in a village in Viotia in order to continue collecting her pension.
The 62-year-old woman, who worked as a manager at a Health Education Center, told the police that her elderly mother had mobility problems and had died of natural causes at their home in 2023 at the age of 91.
However, facing financial difficulties, she concealed her mother’s death in order to continue “receiving disability payments and her pension” and buried her in a stable near the house with the help of a man, whose identity she did not disclose.
Since the summer of 2023, when the incident occurred, the elderly woman had not been seen in the village, prompting a report to the Prosecutor of Thebes, who launched an investigation.
On Saturday, the 62-year-old presented another elderly woman, claiming she was her mother with a health problem, but later admitted to the police that she had buried her real mother near the house with the help of a man. Subsequently, in the presence of a judicial officer, an exhumation was conducted, revealing a human skeleton covered with a sheet.
She is expected to be taken to the Prosecutor of Thebes within the day. A case has been filed against her for violations including “failure to report the discovery of a deceased person,” “false testimony,” “manslaughter by negligence,” and “fraud.”
