Today he celebrates his 73rd birthday / Best wishes to the icon of Korçë football, Dhimitraq Xhambazi!

Dhimitraq Xhambazi, a true master of football, was born in Korçë on February 27, 1952, and from a young age, he had a passion for football, a sport with a long tradition in our city.

From 1967 to 1970, he excelled in the youth team, and then for 12 consecutive years, he became an inseparable part of the Skënderbeu team, under coaches Ilia Shuke and Aleko Pilika, until 1982. During his 12-year career, Xhambazi played in over 240 matches and scored around 110 goals.

He was a physically strong player and a natural goal scorer, “feared” by every defense and goalkeeper. His greatest football achievements were Skënderbeu’s appearance in the final of the Albanian Cup in 1976, and the 1976-77 season when Skënderbeu was crowned runner-up of the country.

He played in several friendly matches with Romanian and Turkish teams that came to Albania at the time, as well as four matches for the Balkan Cup in 1978, where Skënderbeu played against the Greek team Aris from Thessaloniki and the Yugoslav team Rijeka.

It seems paradoxical that Dhimitraq Xhambazi was never part of the Albanian national team, while at that time, he was one of the best forwards and goal scorers in the country.

After retiring from playing football, Xhambazi was a youth coach at the Skënderbeu club for many years, and also worked as a school principal, where his kindness, dedication, professionalism, and experience earned him the respect and affection of his students and colleagues.

He holds the titles of “Sports Master,” “Honorary Citizen of Korça,” as well as “The Order of the Knight of Skënderbeu” awarded by the President of the Republic.

Dhimitraq Xhambazi is and remains a true icon of sports and a respected, beloved figure in his hometown, where for his fellow citizens and sports fans, he remains a legend and a great name, but just as much a remarkable person and a good friend, earning their admiration and gratitude.
