At least 50 migrants, including women and children, are feared dead, while 10 survived after their wooden boat capsized on Tuesday in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Libya, according to foreign media.
The survivors were rescued near El-Bardaa Island, about 70 kilometers west of Tobruk, close to the Egyptian border.
Libya has become a major transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in search of a better life in Europe, crossing dangerous desert routes and the Mediterranean since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising in 2011.
The boat was carrying around 60 migrants. According to the survivors, it departed early in the morning. Sources said the migrants were from various sub-Saharan African countries.
In a separate incident, rescue teams in Tobruk recovered the bodies of four migrants on Monday and rescued 24 others after their boat was found submerged in Libyan waters for two weeks, according to security sources.
