A serious criminal incident has shocked Long Island in the United States, where a 22-year-old undocumented immigrant from El Salvador is accused of committing two brutal murders within a few hours.

According to U.S. authorities, Ronnie Yahir Alvarenga Rivera is suspected of first killing his neighbor, 57-year-old Raquel Hernandez Castillo, after being irritated by noises coming from her apartment.

Nassau County District Attorney Ann Donnelly stated that Rivera told investigators the sound of the woman’s high heels and her loud phone conversations were “driving him crazy.” According to the indictment, on April 30 he attacked her with a knife, stabbing her around 50 times. “When he was arrested, his clothes were covered in blood,” Donnelly said during a media briefing.

Investigators say that after the first crime, the young man concluded he would be arrested and therefore decided to carry out another deadly attack.

The second victim was 42-year-old Ana Maria de Águila Córdova, a mother of three and his co-worker at a restaurant. According to authorities, Rivera waited about 30 minutes near a trash bin outside the workplace. Shortly after midnight on May 1, when the woman went out to dispose of garbage, he attacked her with a knife. Investigators say there had been disagreements between them and that Rivera felt “disrespected” by her. According to the case file, she was stabbed more than 30 times and did not survive her injuries.

After the second crime, the suspect called the police himself around 3:00 a.m. and reported the incident.

“I killed someone tonight,” he reportedly told authorities.

According to U.S. media, Rivera suffered from mental health issues, although details have not been officially disclosed. He entered the United States illegally in 2016, when he was only 12 years old and unaccompanied by family.

On Tuesday, he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to first- and second-degree murder charges, along with other related counts.

The case has sparked strong reactions in the local community and reignited debate over illegal immigration, public safety, and the treatment of individuals with mental health issues in the U.S. Investigations are ongoing.
