A tragic incident shook Italy on Sunday, when a mother and her son were killed in an explosion at a fireworks factory in central Italy. The victims were found in the rubble of the factory in the Torano di Borgorose area of the province of Rieti, about 70 kilometers northeast of Rome.

The victims were identified as Simone Colle, a 30-year-old factory worker, and his 60-year-old mother, Teresa Tocci, according to the regional prosecutor, who spoke to the Italian news agency ANSA.

According to foreign media reports, in July 2023, an explosion at the same factory, owned by the company Pirotecnica Mattei, claimed the lives of three people: Franco Colle and his two children, Anna and Claudio.

The company's owners, Fabrizio and Gaetano Mattei, were sentenced last year to four years in prison for storing explosives at an unauthorized location, employing undeclared workers, and involuntary manslaughter. However, the company had resumed fireworks production after obtaining a new license to manufacture and sell them.

The CGIL trade union confederation stressed that it is essential to fully clarify the causes of the explosion, quickly identify those responsible, and verify compliance with all worker health and safety regulations. Another explosion at a factory owned by the Mattei family also occurred in 1983, killing six people, including three members of the family.
