A referee selected for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, has been arrested on allegations of sexual violence against a minor.

The news, published by the British tabloid The Sun, reports that the referee, who was on the UEFA list for the upcoming tournament, was arrested after a cup match in the United Kingdom.

FIFA has immediately announced that, while investigations are ongoing, he will not be appointed to any matches, including those of his national federation.

According to The Sun article, which cites an anonymous source, the referee, in his thirties, is alleged to have started talking to a minor boy in the hotel common area. He is accused of touching and harassing the boy against his will, later attempting to persuade him to go to his room.

A FIFA spokesperson told The Sun that the organization is monitoring the situation with great concern and that the referee will not be considered for any matches in European competitions during this period. This measure comes due to the serious accusations, which have damaged the image of the sport.
