A concerning food safety case has recently been reported, where over 1,100 kilograms of suspected contaminated almonds have entered the market and, according to authorities, most of them have already been sold to consumers.
The National Food Authority (AKU) has issued an urgent notice, asking citizens to avoid consuming the product “BLANCHED ALMOND EXTRA FINE”, with an expiry date of 22.10.2026, as laboratory tests have detected the presence of hydrocyanic acid above permitted levels, which may pose a health risk.
According to NFA, the alert came through the European Food Safety Alert System (RASFF), which identified the product as unsafe for human consumption.
The product, originating from Spain, was imported into the country by the companies Albanian Smart Distribution sh.p.k. and Alta Group.
Authorities say the situation is particularly concerning because most of the imported quantity has already been distributed on the market and reached end consumers.
NFA urges citizens who have purchased this product not to consume it and to return it to the point of sale or contact the respective retailer.
