The Archbishop of Albania, Anastas Janullatos, has undergone a surgical procedure, a tracheostomy, after the efforts of the team of specialists overseeing his care to wean him off intubation proved unsuccessful.
Anastas has been hospitalized for 20 days at Evangelismos Hospital in Athens and has remained intubated for more than 15 days following a surgical procedure to stop internal bleeding.
According to the same sources, the doctors’ attempts to disconnect him from the intubation apparatus were unsuccessful. After consultations, they decided to perform a tracheostomy, a medical procedure deemed necessary for intubations exceeding a two-week period, to minimize the risks associated with prolonged intubation.
Archbishop Anastas’ health challenges began on December 30, 2024, when he was initially hospitalized in Tirana with severe infection symptoms. On January 3, after his condition worsened, he was transferred by a special medical aircraft to Evangelismos Hospital in Athens.
On January 10, following the worsening of a gastric hemorrhage, he underwent surgery and was intubated. His condition has been described as critical but stable by the medical team treating him, led by Professor Anastasia Kotanidou, an expert in Intensive Care Medicine.
