A new oral medication against “bad” cholesterol (LDL), which blocks the PCSK9 protein, is being considered a revolutionary breakthrough in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Enlicitide decanoate, developed by Merck, is taken only once a day and has shown highly promising results in phase 3 studies presented at the American Heart Association 2025.
Studies showed that the drug can reduce LDL by up to 59%, while also lowering other harmful cholesterol markers such as apolipoprotein B and lipoprotein(a). Side effects were similar to placebo, indicating a favorable safety profile.
This drug could become the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor, replacing current injections and making treatment easier and more accessible for more patients.
The benefits could be significant, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes both in primary prevention for high-risk patients and in secondary prevention for those who have already had cardiovascular events.
If approved by authorities such as the FDA and EMA, this medication could change how high cholesterol is treated and significantly improve patient adherence to therapy.
