Former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji was released from prison today on parole, after having served two-thirds of the one-year sentence handed down by the Albanian justice system.

The decision for conditional release was made by the Tirana Court, which accepted the defense's request based on Salianji’s behavior during his time in prison and the assessment that there is no risk of reoffending.

Salianji was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of "false reporting," related to the well-known “Babale” case, which sparked major public and political debate in Albania years ago. He began serving his sentence at the end of 2024, after exhausting all levels of judicial appeal.

Following his release, there has been no official reaction from Salianji himself, but representatives of the Democratic Party have welcomed the decision, calling it a step toward “restoring justice in a politically fabricated case.”

Meanwhile, critics from the opposing political camp continue to defend the court’s verdict as being based on solid evidence and regular legal procedures.
