Burned alive while sleeping / Nursing home engulfed in flames, 16 people lose their lives

Sixteen people have lost their lives and three others have been injured as a result of a fire that broke out at a nursing home in the city of Manado, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The news was confirmed today to AFP by rescue worker Jimmy Rotinsulu, who said that most of the victims were found inside their rooms.

According to him, the elderly residents were most likely resting in their rooms on Sunday evening at the moment the fire broke out.

Authorities managed to evacuate 12 people, all unharmed, who were later taken to a local hospital for medical checks.

Footage broadcast by local television Metro TV showed flames engulfing the nursing home building, while local residents assisted emergency teams in evacuating the elderly. The cause of the fire remains unclear, and authorities have launched an investigation.
