The city of Pogradec is today paying its final farewell to Police officer Enea Mekolli, who was declared a “Martyr of the Nation” after losing his life in the line of duty during a police operation in Lozhan.

The tributes in honor of the 34-year-old were held at the Cultural Center of Pogradec, where family members, friends, colleagues, and numerous citizens gathered to pay their respects and express solidarity with his family.

Although state regulations provide that “Martyrs of the Nation” are to be laid to rest in the special cemetery in Tirana, Mekolli’s family requested that he be buried in his hometown. The decision was made out of a wish for him to rest next to his brother, who also served in the ranks of the State Police and passed away years ago.

Following the memorial ceremony, the funeral procession departed for the village of Blacë, where Enea Mekolli was laid to rest.

A day earlier, the family of the fallen officer was visited by the Minister of the Interior, Besfort Lamallari, and the Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, who expressed condolences and praised his sacrifice.

Enea Mekolli lost his life during an operation to arrest a highly wanted individual. According to preliminary information, the suspect opened fire on the “Shqiponja” units, killing the officer and seriously injuring his colleague, Edison Adri. During the exchange of fire, the suspect was also injured and is reported to be out of life-threatening danger.
