Destructive winds, hail, and tornadoes / European forecasters raise the alarm over extreme weather in the region; storms could also affect Albania's coastline!

European weather forecasters have issued a warning for severe weather across a large part of Europe, raising the risk level to Level 2 for southeastern Italy, the Ionian Sea, and surrounding areas due to the possibility of large to very large hail, destructive winds, intense rainfall, and isolated tornadoes, especially in coastal regions.


According to forecasts, during the evening and overnight hours, a powerful storm system is expected to develop over central Italy and the Adriatic Sea before moving further south. The system is expected to affect the Puglia region and then move toward the eastern shores of the Ionian Sea, including the southwestern coast of Albania and western Greece.


Meteorologists warn that these areas could experience destructive winds, very large hail, heavy rainfall, and, in isolated cases, tornadoes. They say that if a storm supercell passes near the coastline, there is a possibility of a strong tornado forming.

Meanwhile, Level 1 risk has been issued for Slovenia and Croatia, where hail, strong winds, and heavy rainfall are expected. The same warning level applies to northeastern Italy and the northern Adriatic, where the possibility of isolated tornadoes in coastal areas cannot be ruled out.


Storm warnings have also been issued for parts of eastern Spain, where large hail and strong winds are expected, as well as for southwestern Russia.


According to meteorologists, the atmospheric situation across Europe remains favorable for the development of extreme weather events due to the interaction between hot, very humid air masses and a deep atmospheric trough moving from Central Europe toward the Mediterranean.


In the Ionian Sea region, sea surface temperatures are around 4–5 degrees Celsius above normal, creating ideal conditions for the development of powerful storms. Forecasters emphasize that real-time monitoring of the situation will be crucial, as the location and intensity of storms can change rapidly.
